Understanding the curriculum
British-style schools may offer different pathways. Cambridge offers a progression including Primary, Lower Secondary, IGCSE and AS and A Level. A school can offer only some stages, so check continuity through to the final qualification you want.
Stages of the pathway
Early learning and primary
Compare settling-in support, play, reading and learning in English. Ask for a typical timetable and support arrangements for children new to the language.
Secondary and IGCSE
In the Cambridge pathway, IGCSEs belong to Upper Secondary, typically from age 14. Ask which subjects, examining body and preparation schedule the school uses.
AS and A Level
The Advanced stage, typically from age 16, allows more in-depth subject study. Compare available combinations with the entry requirements for future studies.
When might this pathway suit your family?
- English is central to your family’s plans.
- The school’s language support matches your child’s current needs.
- You can plan subject choices and continuity through the final examinations.
Questions to ask on a visit
- Which curriculum is used at each stage, and who awards the qualifications?
- Does the same campus prepare pupils for both IGCSEs and A Levels?
- Which subjects are available, and do they require a minimum class size?
- Are examination fees and English support included in the quoted fees?

Frequently asked questions
Is every English-medium school British?
No. It might follow an American, Canadian, Moroccan or international programme. The teaching language alone does not identify the curriculum.
Does my child need to speak English already?
Requirements vary by age and entry grade. Ask about language assessment, available support and the progress expected during the first year.
Does every Cambridge school offer A Levels?
No. Stages can be offered separately. Check which grades are available and how pupils can continue their studies.
