The school landscape in Marrakech

Nurseries and preschools make up a high share of Marrakech’s private schools, a sign of strong demand from young families. Schools that continue through high school are fewer, so it’s worth checking continuity early.

Long-established schools are concentrated in Guéliz and the Hivernage, while newer schools, often with large outdoor areas, have opened toward Targa and the Ourika road.

Neighborhoods to know

Schools are not spread evenly across the city. These areas come up often in the addresses of listed schools; use them as a first reference point before checking the actual commute from your home.

Guéliz
A modern, central district with many private and international schools.
Hivernage
A residential area home to long-established, well-regarded schools.
Medina
Neighborhood schools and traditional schools; car access can be difficult.
Targa and the Ourika road
Newer campuses with green spaces; school transport is often necessary.

The curricula you will find

  • Moroccan curriculum — the national curriculum, often with extra French in private schools.
  • French curriculum — schools in the French network abroad (the AEFE) and schools accredited by the French Ministry of Education.
  • Bilingual schools — French-Arabic or French-English, very common at preschool and primary level.
  • International curricula — a few English-language schools and alternative approaches (Montessori in particular) at preschool level.

The advertised curriculum doesn’t tell the whole story: always ask which language is actually used in class and how many hours each language gets. Our guide which school system to choose will help you decide.

Tips for choosing a school in Marrakech

  • Set your priorities. French, bilingual or international curriculum: the answer completely changes the list of schools to visit.
  • Check continuity. If the school stops at primary or middle school, identify the next school now.
  • Think about location. Campuses on the outskirts are pleasant but mean a longer daily commute.
  • Use an all-in budget. Add transport, canteen and activities to tuition fees to compare like with like.
  • Talk to parents. At the school gate or through people you know: first-hand experience is invaluable.
