The school landscape in Casablanca

Casablanca has schools for almost every profile: school groups running from preschool to high school, bilingual neighborhood schools, schools in the French network and English-speaking schools. This diversity is an advantage, but it makes shortlisting harder.

The size of the city also changes priorities. An excellent school forty-five minutes away by car can become a poor choice day to day, especially for a young child. Many families therefore start by drawing a realistic area, then compare the schools within it.

Neighborhoods to know

Schools are not spread evenly across the city. These areas come up often in the addresses of listed schools; use them as a first reference point before checking the actual commute from your home.

Maârif
Central district with a high concentration of private and bilingual schools, convenient if you work downtown.
Anfa
Residential area with several international schools and well-regarded schools.
Aïn Diab and the Corniche
Coastal area with newer schools and often more spacious campuses.
Californie and Bouskoura
Fast-growing southern outskirts: new campuses, international schools, and school transport is all but essential.

The curricula you will find

  • Moroccan curriculum — the national curriculum, often with extra French and English in private schools.
  • French curriculum — schools in the French network abroad (the AEFE) and schools accredited by the French Ministry of Education.
  • Bilingual schools — Arabic-French or French-English, with very different hours per language from one school to another.
  • English-language curricula — British (IGCSE, A-Levels) or American curricula, and a few IB schools.

The advertised curriculum doesn’t tell the whole story: always ask which language is actually used in class and how many hours each language gets. Our guide which school system to choose will help you decide.

Tips for choosing a school in Casablanca

  • Test the commute at rush hour. Do the home-to-school trip on a weekday morning before deciding, and ask about the school bus routes.
  • Settle on the school system before visiting. Moroccan, French, bilingual or international: deciding up front shortens the list considerably.
  • Compare the full budget. Registration, transport, canteen and activities can make up a large share of the yearly cost.
  • Visit at least three schools. The atmosphere, the welcome and the way the staff answer your questions say a lot.
  • Check accreditations. Ask which body recognizes the curriculum (Moroccan Ministry of Education, French network, Cambridge, IB).
